News and Events for All Saints Church, Theydon Garnon

Many thanks to those of you who have returned your consent forms; not only is this important from a compliance perspective, but the production of a database of church members should make administrative life considerably easier. There is still time for forms to be returned and can we remind you that we do need a form per person, not per family. We will be very mindful of what we send to you and will not bombard you with anything!

The fete held on Sunday 10thJuly was a most enjoyable and successful event. The Bishop of Barking preached at the morning service and stayed for lunch. This well-attended event raised just over £3,000 for church funds. Our thanks go to all those who came along to support us, and to everyone who worked so hard to make the event happen.

Baptism of adults or children (often referred to as a Christening), is a marker of the beginning of a journey with God. This journey is life long, and coming to Baptism is a step making a positive response to the love of God for all people, as revealed through the life and work of Jesus Christ. It is not about having all the answers, but it is about wanting to bring Jesus into the centre of life, and to look to Him to receive as a gift the life which He offers. In the service, serious promises are made, and other signs of the Christian way are used, including the presentation of a lit candle, which is a sign of the light of Christ which has conquered evil, and that which Christians follow on the life-long journey of faith. Baptism services usually take place in the main Sunday services (9.15a.m. at All Saints TG and 10.30a.m at St Mary's TB, or St Michael's TM or St Mary's ST) or in special circumstances a service can be arranged for 12.30p.m at St Mary's TB or 2.00p.m. at All Saints TG. If you would like to be baptised, or to make arrangements for a child to be baptised, the first step is to attend a Baptism preparation session. The next session is on Thursday 12th July at 8.00p.m. at St Mary's TB.

Last February, I joined a group led by Rev. Sally Lynch on a memorable trip to Israel.

The group of 17 were very friendly, the Christian Palestinian guide was excellent, the accommodation, meals etc very good, and the comprehensive itinerary took us to all the important Christian sites in Jerusalem, the desert, Bethlehem, Nazareth etc, to the Dead Sea, and Masada, and to Galilee. Sally was a very experienced, kind and inspiring leader: memorable moments were many, such as Communion on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, by the river Jordan at the Baptism site…Sally is leading a Pilgrimage again, from 2-11 October, 2018, 10 days based in Jerusalem and Galilee. Further information from Robyn,

Evening Prayer is usually said publicly in the Benefice at St Mary's TB on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 5p.m.  The service takes place in the choir stalls, and entry is via the clergy door at the east end of the building.

The Benefice Office now holds a parish passes for each church in our group.  Each pass can be used on 6 occasions, and allows a group of up for 4 people entry for free each time.  Passes can be borrowed from Sarah Bowen.

Email contacts for the Vicar and Benefice Administrator have changed, please use or to contact John or Sarah.  Our Vicar is trying to be more disciplined in using email, and will not have access to email on the move, so sometimes it may take a little longer for a reply to be sent.
